The brief
The meme is true. That is why it is funny.
Young Black men in London see themselves online as a punchline or a warning. POV Series takes the same situations, the corner shop, the group chat, the date, the friend who lies, the two man that falls apart, and plays them back from the inside, in first person, as they actually feel.
Each episode is an amalgamation of experiences the audience has had or watched a friend have. The comedy works because the truth lands first.
The series was built on a repeatable formula: pick a song hook, layer its instrumental, write the dialogue the scene needs, shoot vertical on a 9:16 monitor, cut short. Fifteen episodes shot across three days in EC1 and released from 15 December 2023 into January 2024 on TRYSUTTIN channels, as owned IP and as the test bed for TRY42 self producing system and Vertical Cinema.
The film
— The Problem
Short form was full of young Black men, but almost none of it was made by them or felt like them. TRYSUTTIN wanted a series that showed the richness and the comedy of the everyday from the inside, and a format that made cinema accessible on the screen people actually use.
— The Approach
Every episode starts with a song hook that sets the world. The instrumental sits under it. The dialogue is written to the scene the audience already knows. Shot 9:16 on a vertical monitor so the frame is right on set, not fixed in the edit. Fifteen episodes shot across three days in EC1, on a friend's sofa and a car park, with mates as cast.
— The Result
Fifteen episodes released 15 December 2023 into January 2024 on TRYSUTTIN channels. The series tested TRY42 self producing system end to end, became the proof of concept for Vertical Cinema, and set up the brand partnership model that followed.
